Fred Kelly was a two-sport star at Odin, who really came into his own as an athlete once in college. He never played baseball until his junior year in high school. He struck out 18 batters in his pitching debut. He played outfield and second when not pitching. Fred dominated in his senior season. Striking out 19 hitters in one game. The 1954 Eagles won the Tri-County Conf. It was the first trophy ever won by the Eagles in baseball. Fred averaged 15 strikeouts a game that season. In basketball for the Eagles, Fred was a smooth shooting forward known for his jumping ability and athleticism. He lettered 3 years for the Eagles. Fred graduated from Odin in 1954. As accomplished as his high school career was in both sports, it was at Centralia Junior College (now Kaskaskia) that he really blossomed. He started in basketball in his first season. A team that was ranked 2nd in the entire country at the junior college level. The 1955 team went 20-5 and averaged 91 points a game. The team is inducted in the Centralia Sports Hall of Fame. His sophomore season he had a 33-point game. His ability in basketball led Indiana State University to offer him a free ride to continue playing for them. Fred opted to not accept the offer and instead signed with the Cincinnati Red Legs in the spring of 1956. Fred had also been prominent for the Blue Devil baseball team and led them in hitting while playing second base when not pitching. His pitching got the attention of several pro scouts, including fellow Odin Hall of Famer, Chuck Hawley. It was Chuck that signed Fred to his first pro contract. Fred had also been offered a tryout with the St. Louis Hawks NBA basketball team, but decided baseball was his passion. Fred competed in the Georgia/Florida League. He really impressed the big club while in Douglas, Georgia in 1956. He was considered to be the Red Legs top overall prospect of some 400 hopeful young players. Known for his competitive nature and his will to win, Fred continued to pile up the strikeouts. In his third season of pro ball, Fred suffered a shoulder injury to his right shoulder, that would unfortunately end his pro baseball career. He tore several muscles in his shoulder. Fred ranks as one of the top all-around athletes in Eagle history. Not only performing well in high school in both sports but achieving and competing in college and the pro level as well.
